Summary

This book about wayang is not a scientific treatise, but is intended to give a popular explanation and to stimulate interest among foreign readers. It is devoted mainly to the oldest form, which is called Wayang Purwa.
The idea for the book was supported by Minister Soepardjo Rustam, while the production of the book was made possible through the generosity of Bapak Probosoetedjo.

The team responsible for the contents is Pandam Guritno (dalang and author), Haryono Guritno (wayang designer and art director), Teguh S. Djamal (photographer) and Molly Bondan (English editor and team leader).

Grateful thanks are due to the Royal Courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta and to the Princely Courts of Pakualaman and Mangkunegaran for permitting photographs to be taken of some of their wayang activities and their venerable wayang puppets, to the Wayang Museum for permission to reproduce part of its valuable collections, to the well-know dalangs, Haji Anom Suroto Lebdo Carito and Timbul Hadiprayitno, for their especial cooperation, and to all the wayang artists, musicians and dalangs whose photographs appear in this book.
