Durga - (Batari) - All stories[edit | edit source]

Batari Durga was actually Batara Guru's wife when she still had a beautiful face. Her name is Dewi Uma or Dewi Umayi. It is said that one afternoon before dusk, Betara Guru and Dewi Uma went to entertain themselves by riding Andini's ox in the sky to see the natural scenery. Accidentally while above the ocean, the wind uncovered Goddess Uma's cloth. Batara Guru was tempted to see his wife's calves, he then seduced Dewi Uma and invited her to make love right then and there on the ox Andini's platform. However, Dewi Uma refused her husband's invitation because she felt that it was inappropriate.

Batara Guru didn't care about his wife's rejection, he kept trying to seduce her, but Dewi Uma kept trying to avoid her, finally because she could no longer hold back her desire, Batara Guru's kama (semen) came out and fell into the sea. Dewi Uma's refusal made Batara Guru annoyed and angry. They then quarreled, and it turned out that Lembu Andini was secretly pitting them against each other. In a fit of anger, Dewi Uma said that Batara Guru's actions were only suitable for a creature with long fangs. What Dewi Uma said came true, Batara Guru's anger increased even more after he realized that his fangs had grown longer. Batara Guru also responded by cursing Dewi Uma to become a raksesi.

Batara Guru's curse came true, Dewi Uma turned into a curse. Both of them later regretted it. However, because he had already changed his form into a mercenary, Batara Guru did not want to consider Dewi Uma as his wife anymore. Batara Guru then changed the physical body of Dewi Uma with the body of Sang Hyang Permoni who was beautiful but jealous and naughty. While the soul of Sang Hyang Permoni was put into the body of Goddess Uma who had taken the form of a monster and was given the name Betari Durga.

Some time after that, a vicious creature appeared who rampaged through heaven and made three wishes. The creature asked to be recognized as a child, given a name and given a wife. Batara Guru also granted the creature's request. He was given the name Batara Kala and then given the wife Betari Durga. The creature emerged from Batara Guru's room which fell into the sea.
Batara Kala and Batari Durga are given a place in Kahyangan Setra Gandamayit, in the forest of Krendawahana. They control all kinds of jinn, gandharwa and other ethereal beings. In Pewayangan, Batari Durga becomes a deity for those who like to take shortcuts. Betari Durga was able to recover as a beautiful angel after being treated by Sadewa, the youngest of the Pandavas. Sadewa was able to heal Batari Durga after his body was infiltrated by Batara Guru. The incident was told in the play Sudamala or Murwakala.
