Jembawan – (Kapi) – Ramayana, Mahabharata

At first, Kapi Jembawan did not have the form of a monkey. He was one of the children of Resi Pulastya who went to seek knowledge by becoming a cantrik (student) at the Grastina Hermitage, studying with Begawan Gotama. When Begawan Gotama was angry with his wife, Dewi Indradi, the hermit drove his children away. After his children left, Gotama regretted it, and ordered two of his cantriks, namely Jembawan and Menda, to follow Subali, Sugriwa and Dewi Anjani.

The three children of Begawan Gotama arrived at Lake Sumala, and they changed their form into monkeys after entering the lake to look for Cupu Manik Astagina. Jembawan and Menda also jumped into the lake to help their teacher's children. Jembawan and Menda then transformed into monkeys. Since then, they were called Kapi Jembawan and Kapi Menda.

In the great Alengka war, Jembawan took part in the battle as a general of the monkey army and becoming one of the monkey army's warriors. He is a king of the monkeys who helps the other monkey king, Sugriwa, to cross to the island of Langka where Rahwana lives. It was Kapi Jembawan who killed Ditya Wilrupaksa, the commander of Alengka who caused many casualties among the monkey soldiers. With his magical powers, Wilrupaksa flew into the sky, then threw himself right into the line of monkeys, so that many died crushed by his large and heavy body.

Kapi Jembawan then infiltrated and mingled with his men while carrying his main weapon, yellow bamboo. When Wilrupaksa's body fell towards the line of monkeys, Jembawan ordered his men to lie down, then lifted his yellow bamboo. Ditya Wilrupaksa's body was pierced by the yellow bamboo, piercing through from his chest to his back, and he died instantly.

During the fight over Cupumanik Astagina, Jembawan also jumped into the Sumala lake and changed his form into a monkey. When there was a dispute between Subali and Sugriwa over Dewi Tara and the kingdom of Gowa Kiskenda, Jambawan returned to the Grastina hermitage to take care of Anoman, who after the death of his mother, Dewi Anjani, was raised by Kapi Saraba. After Anoman grew up, they then served Prabu Sugriwa in Gowa Kiskenda.

Kapi Jembawan fell in love with Dewi Trijata, the daughter of Gunawan Wibisana. However, he also realized that he was just an ugly old monkey. There was no way he could marry Trijata if the beautiful woman was proposed to in a good way. What's more, he knew that Dewi Trijata actually hoped for the love of the handsome Laksmana, Ramawijaya's younger brother.
Unable to contain his longing for Dewi Trijata, Kapi Jembawan finally took the wrong shortcut. With the high knowledge he had, he disguised himself as Laksmana. After changing into a fake Laksmana, he met Trijata, in his heart he also missed Laksmana very much. They also let go of their longing, venting their love desires. However, this scandal was uncovered and as a result the real Laksmana became the scapegoat. (In the Play: Twin Laksmana)

Ramawijaya immediately sentenced Laksmana. That was when the chivalrous nature reappeared in Kapi Jembawan. Before Laksmana was punished, Kapi Jembawan admitted all his mistakes, apologized and was willing to accept any punishment.
Prabu Ramawijaya acted wisely by marrying Kapi Jembawan to Trijata. Dewi Trijata realized that she was not the match for the handsome Laksmana, but for Kapi Jembawan.

The marriage between Trijata and Kapi Jembawan occurred according to the curse of her uncle, Prabu Dasamuka. The curse was uttered when Dewi Trijata was assigned to accompany Dewi Sinta in the kidnapping, to persuade her to be willing to become Prabu Dasamuka's consort. However, Dewi Trijata actually sympathized with Sinta. Because she was considered a traitor, Dasamuka cursed Trijata, that in the future she would marry an ugly old monkey. The marriage of Kapi Jembawan and Dewi Trijata was blessed with a daughter named Dewi Jembawati.

After the Alengka war, Jambawan and his family lived in the Gadamadana hermitage. He lived as a brahmin. Resi Jembawan died at an old age, his body was buried in the Gadamadana hermitage. Dewi Jembawati and Kresna had children named Raden Samba and Gunadewa. After Jembawan grew old, Astana Gadamadana was guarded by Gunadewa, who had a tail like a monkey. However, tragedy struck when Gadamadana was attacked by Trajutrisna, Sitija's brother. In the battle, Gunadewa fell at the hands of Ancakugra, Sitija's subordinate.
