Bisma - (Resi) - Mahabharata

Bhishma actually had seven older siblings, but all of them died because they were drowned in the Ganges river by their own mother, the Goddess Gangga. Bhishma himself survived because his father Prabu Santanu prevented Dewi Gangga's actions. Bhishma's baby was then taken by his mother to heaven and left Prabu Santanu. 36 years later, Bhishma was found by his father, Prabu Santanu, downstream of the Ganges river. Goddess Gangga then handed him over to the King and gave him the name Dewabrata.

Dewabrata grew up to be an intelligent and dashing prince, and he was nominated as heir to the royal throne. However, because Dewabrata had promised to the Dasapati, namely the father of his stepmother, Setyawati, he was willing to give up the position of heir to the throne and not marry for the rest of his life. And because of his sincerity he was given the name Bhishma and received the gift of being able to befriend the God of Time , so that he could determine the time of his own death.

Bhishma went to the Kasi Kingdom to take part in the competition, and finally he won, so he managed to bring three daughters named Amba , Ambika and Ambalaka. He did all this just to make his two younger siblings happy. However, Citranggada died, so Ambika and Ambalaka married Wicitrawirya, while Amba loved Bhishma. Because of his promise and oath, Bhishma rejected Amba's love. And Bhishma accidentally shot an arrow into Amba's chest, causing Amba to die. Upon his death, he was told that Amba would be reincarnated as a prince with feminine characteristics, namely the son of King Drupada , named Srikandi . And one day his death will be at the hands of Srikandi.

Bhishma studied political science from Brihaspati (teacher of the Gods), Veda and Vedanga science from Resi Vasitha , and war science from Parasurama (Ramaparasu, Rama Bargawa), a legendary knight and also one of the Chiranjiwin who lived eternally since the Treta Yuga era . In the Hastinapura environment, Bhishma was highly respected by his children and grandchildren, and he was greatly loved by the Pandavas and Korawas. They respected Bhishma as a wise grandfather and head of the family.

In the battle at Kurukhsetra , Bhishma was on the side of the Korawa. Before the battle, he told Yudistira that he was enslaved by wealth, and with his wealth, the Korawa bound Bhishma. However, he also gave his blessing to Yudistira and prayed that victory would be on the Pandava side. Bhishma once said to Doryudana , even though he was on the Korawa side, victory would still be on the Pandava side, because Krishna was there, and wherever there was Krishna, there was truth and good fortune and wherever there was Arjuna , there was glory.

In that battle, anyone who faced Bhishma would definitely die or suffer serious injuries. In the book Bismaparwa it is written that the only ones who were able to fight Bhishma were Arjuna and Krishna . However, even though Arjuna had the opportunity to fight Bhishma, he often fought half-heartedly, considering that Bhishma was his own grandfather. Likewise with Bhishma, he still really loves Arjuna, the grandson he loves very much. Seeing Arjuna who was still reluctant to attack and end Bhishma's life, Krishna, who was Arjuna's train driver, became furious and was determined to kill Bhishma with his own hands. Full of anger, Krishna twirled his Chakra and focused his attention on aiming for Bhishma's neck. Seeing this, Bhishma did not shy away, and would actually be happy if he died at Krishna's hands. Arjuna caught up with Krishna and tried to stop Krishna. Arjuna sadly said: “O Kesawa (Krishna), do not falsify the words you have spoken before! Your Majesty has promised that he will not join the war. O Madhawa (Krishna), if you continue with your intentions, people will say that you are a liar. All the suffering caused by this war, I must bear it! It is my servant who will kill that venerable grandfather!...". Hearing what Arjuna said, Krishna gave up his intention to finish off Bhishma.

After Kresna gave up his intention to finish off Bhishma, Pandavas and Krishna came to Bhishma's camp to find his weakness. Bhishma knew that the arrival of the Pandavas and Krishna meant the arrival of his grandchildren. He also welcomed the arrival of the Pandavas and Krishna in a friendly manner. When Yudhishthira asked what they had to do in order to defeat the grandfather they respected so much, Bhishma answered that he would not attack someone who had thrown away his weapon and who had fallen from his war chariot. He would also not attack an enemy whose weapon had fallen from his hand, his flag, the symbol of his greatness is destroyed, the person who runs away, the person who is in a state of fear, the person who submits and says that he surrenders, and also will not attack a woman, someone whose name is like a woman. Bhishma then continued, if the Pandavas wanted to defeat him, they had to place someone who would make Bhishma reluctant to fight in front of Arjuna's train as he said, because Bhishma believed that only Arjuna and Krishna could defeat him.

Guided by Bhishma's statement, Krishna made Arjuna aware of his obligations. In the Baratayuda War Bhishma sided with Astina, was appointed commander-in-chief and faced Dewi Srikandi, daughter of Cempalareja and hero of Pendawa. It was this daughter Srikandi who became Bhishma's opponent in the Baratayuda War. On the tenth day, Srikandi was asked to attack Bhishma. Bhishma did not resist Srikandi's attack, and behind Srikandi, Arjuna was ready to shoot his arrows and paralyze Bhishma. Arjuna's arrow stuck and penetrated the armor of the grandfather he loved and respected so much. Bhishma fell from his war chariot, but his body did not touch the ground because it was supported by dozens of arrows stuck in his body.
Bhishma had the gift that he can determine the time of his own death. He was able to watch until the war between the Pandavas and Korawas ended. Witnessing the destruction of the Korawa troops and giving sacred advice to Yudhistira. Finally Resi Bisma died because he was hit by the daughter's arrow, as predicted by Dewi Ambika, before he died.
