Baruna – (Batara) – All stories

In the Serat Uttarakanda, it is stated that Batara Baruna is a god who is included in the "Catur Lokapala". (Lokapala 4: Indra, Yama, Baruna, Kuwer).

Batara Baruna likes to provide help and advice to humans on earth such as; When Maharsi Ricika (Father of Maharsi Jamagdani or Grandfather of Ramaparasu) wanted to propose to Dewi Setyawati, Daughter of Prabu Gandi, King of Kanyakawya. At that time, Maharsi Ricika was asked for a requirement in the form of a thousand horses, with red ules and one ear must be the same color, namely black. With the help of Batara Baruna, the Maharsi was able to fulfill the requirement.

When Prabu Ramawijaya led his wadyabala/monkey troops to attack the country of Alengka, their journey was blocked by the ocean. Batara Baruna came to Ramawijaya and gave him advice to make a dam/pond. With Batara Baruna's advice, he asked the monkey troops he led to make the dam/ocean pond until finally they could reach the country of Alengka.

Batara Baruna also had a daughter named Dewi Urangayu who became Anoman's wife, and had a son named Tringangga. However, before becoming Anoman's wife, Dewi Urangayu was the concubine of Prabu Dasamuka and had a son named Pratalamariyam (Kuntalamariyam) or Bukbis. Since childhood, Tringangga accompanied his mother in Kandabumi with Pratalamariyam.
To Trigangga and Pratalamariyam, Dewi Urangayu explained that both were the sons of Prabu Dasamuka. Trigangga also believed what his mother said. Therefore, every time Pratalamariyam visited his father, Pabu Dasamuka in Alengka, Trigangga always came along. That way he became more convinced that Prabu Dasamuka was his father, without realizing that his real father was in the Kendhalisada hermitage.

Both Baruna’s grandchildren inherited knowledge from their grandfather. To increase his supernatural powers, Kuntalamariyam/Bukbis asked his grandfather to be given supernatural powers so that he would not be defeated by the other sons of Prabu Dasamuka. So Batara Baruna gave him the "Guntur Dahana" spell which was centered in his eyes. Anyone who looked into his eyes would be burnt. Meanwhile, Trigangga was given supernatural powers to enter the realm of the jinn, all jinns were subject to and submitted to Trigangga.

Therefore, Prabu Dasamuka loved Kuntalamariyam and Trigangga very much, even though he knew that one of them was not his descendant. In the Kandhabumi kingdom, Kuntalamariyam and Tringgangga were respected and loved by their people because of their wisdom and love for their people. All of this was inseparable from the teachings given by their grandfather, Batara Baruna.
