Kumbakarna - (Raden) - Arjuna Sasra Bahu / Ramayana

Kumbakarna is the younger brother of Ravana, the giant king of Lanka. Kumbakarna's physical form is that of a very tall giant with a terrible face. However, he has the qualities of an officer, honest, brave because he is right and often makes his brother aware of the wrong actions. His weakness was that he slept for six months and while he slept, he was unable to exert all his strength.

When he was young, Kumbakarna meditated together to worship the God Brahma. When Lord Brahma appeared to grant him a boon, he asked Goddess Saraswati to enter his mouth to bend his tongue. Therefore when he asked for “Indraasan” (Indrasan means the throne of God Indra), he said “Neendrasan” (Nindrsan means eternal sleep). Feeling love for his younger brother, Ravana asked Brahma to cancel the award. But Brahma did not want to cancel his gift, but he lightened the gift so that Kumbakarna slept for six months and woke up for six months. When it is in sleep, it will not exert all its strength.

As a younger brother who loved and cared about his older brother, Kumbakarna often gave advice to Ravana, that what he was doing was wrong. But even though he knew that he was on the wrong side, he remained loyal to his brother, more precisely, he was loyal to his homeland, namely Alengka. When Ravana was overwhelmed by Sri Rama, he ordered Kumbakarna to face him. And in order to defend the land of his homeland, he went forward to face Rama, he fought without any feeling of hostility, he did it all just carrying out his obligations.

When Lanka was invaded by Rama's troops, Kumbakarna was asleep, so Ravana asked his troops to wake him up. Ravana's messenger woke him up by leading an elephant to trample his body, when his eyes opened, he was presented with a dish of food. After finishing eating the food served, Kumbakarna only really woke up from his sleep. After waking up, Kumbakarna faced Ravana. He tried to advise his brother to return Sita and explain that his brother's actions were wrong. Ravana was sad to hear the advice of the younger brother he loved so much, and it touched Kumbakarna. Without having any feelings of hostility towards Rama, he went to war to fulfill his obligation as a defender of the country, not to defend his brother's actions.

In that war, Kumbakarna killed many Vanara troops and also managed to injure selected soldiers such as Anggada, Sugriwa, Hanoman and Nila (Anila). Rama, with his powerful arrow, managed to sever both of Kumbakarna's hands. But with his feet, he could still trample an army of Vanara. Rama then cut off Kumbakarna's leg with his arrow. Kumbakarna did not give up, even though he had no arms and legs, he could still roll his body and run over the Vanara troops. Rama was amazed to see Kumbakarna's strength , but he didn't want to make Kumbakarna suffer for too long. He finally released his last arrow. The arrow separated Kumbakarna's head from his body, Kumbakarna died in the center of Alengka city.
