Jatayu was an eagle, who died while trying to thwart the kidnapping of Dewi Sinta by Prabu Dasamuka, king of Alengka. He is the youngest son of Garuda Brihawan, the big bird that Batara Wisnnu rode on. He has a brother named Sempati.<p>

While still in the form of eggs, Jatayu and Sempati were adopted as children by Dewi Ngruna, one of Batara Surya's wives.<br>
